Spiders in Albuquerque
As the weather gets colder, the spiders found in Albuquerque’s natural surroundings become household pests during their search for shelter. While not all spiders are necessarily harmful, it is a good idea to keep an eye out for these common pests just in case. To give you a better idea of what you should be looking out for, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common spiders in Albuquerque.
Black Widows
Black widow spiders can be identified by their black color and ½ inch body size. Females have a red or yellow hourglass marking on the bottom of their abdomen. They are commonly found outdoors in scrap piles and sheds. When indoors, they find small crawlspaces in basements and garages. Bites from these spiders are very painful and can even be fatal for children and the elderly.
Recluse Spiders
These spiders are also referred to as “violin spiders” because of their violin-shaped bodies. Common recluse spiders in New Mexico include the Arizona recluse, the Apache recluse, and the desert recluse. While they are not as common, brown recluse spiders can also be found in Albuquerque. These are the most dangerous of the recluse family.
Orb Weaver Spiders
These common Albuquerque spiders are considered harmless to humans. They are most often found in lawns or gardens and create very large webs. They are characterized by a large, round abdomen that can be colored. The most common type of orb weaver in Albuquerque is the golden orb weaver spider.
Wolf Spiders
Wolf spiders are hunter spiders that do not build webs. They are easy to spot as they have hairy bodies and can grow to be about an inch in body length. Their coloration is normally gray or brown. While wolf spider bites are non-lethal, they do cause pain and swelling.
